COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Demolition on a Columbus landmark was set to begin Monday.

NBC 4's Tom Brockman GOT ANSWERS on the demolition of the Town Street Bridge.

Eight months after being closed, the crews began demolition on the Town Street Bridge.

Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman was there to kickoff demolition of the historic landmark that spanned the Scioto River, connecting Franklinton and Downtown since it opened in 1917.

The city abruptly closed the Town Street Bridge without warning in July 2008 after Ohio Department of Transportation engineers found additional deterioration over a past inspection and minor movement on the bridge deck.

ODOT told the city the bridge could be closed, monitored or restricted for vehicle weight.

The city chose cautiousness and closed it.

Once demolition is complete, residents can expect to see crews working on a replacement bridge.

Some slight changes were planned for the replacement.

For example, the replacement bridge still will start at Town Street on the west side of the Scioto but will connect with Rich Street on the east side of the river.

Two westbound and one eastbound lane were planned.

It was estimated 12,000 motorists will use the bridge on a daily basis.

Officials said the bridge should be completed in 2012.
