CENTRAL OHIO -- Business ideas and important innovations sometimes come out of economic struggle.
Turn your dream project into an entrepreneurial reality.
With almost 8 percent of Ohioans out of work, it's hard to find the light at the end of this long, dark economic downturn.
There's a glimmer of hope for bright entrepreneurs, though.
Do you have an idea for a new business?
NBC 4's Mikaela Hunt reported on at a local initiative that could boost business growth and job creation in Central Ohio.
"I wanted to do something … do something revolutionary."
You may not think bottled water is revolutionary, but one local entrepreneur challenged you to think again.
Infused with as much caffeine as passion, Brian Pitzer started working full-time on his product, Avitae, one year ago.
"I've got a family. I was a little nervous about health benefits and giving up a great job," Pitzer said.
But through the Columbus State Small Business Development Center, Pitzer found his stride in his brand-new business and confidence that he could provide for his family.
"Individuals are coming to the realization they've kind of got to do things on their own," Michael Bowers said.
Bowers works with entrepreneurs, such as Pitzer, in a time during which the economy is rough.
Bowers said he has seen an increase in those wanting to start their own business since this past fall.
Hunt asked Bowers how entrepreneurs can bootstrap, work with their own funds and make something happen?
Bowers said whether you work with Columbus State or another program for start-ups, connectivity to resources is key.
The group should be able to help you find things such as product-testing services, financing options or real-estate management.
Pitzer landed an office here at the Dublin Entrepreneurial Center for the right price.
"I'd rather look back and say, 'I loved and lost than not loved at all.' In this case – 'Tried and failed than not try at all,' " Pitzer said.
