TOLEDO, Ohio -- Authorities who plucked 130 stranded ice fishermen off Lake Erie last month are looking into whether they can set up a warning system that would alert anglers when the ice isn't safe.
Right now, there are no such advisories in place.
State representative Dennis Murray says someone has to be in charge of saying when it's safe to be out on the ice. He says he might propose legislation that would create such a system.
Some authorities along Lake Erie think a warning system may have stopped some anglers from venturing out in early February when winds and warming temperatures made the ice dangerous.
The U.S. Coast Guard had to rescue the fishermen when the ice broke apart.
