NEWBERRY, Mich. -- Police say an Ohio man was killed and his wife was injured when their snowmobile ran off a trail and struck several trees in Michigan's eastern Upper Peninsula.
State police say 25-year-old Daniel Barhorst of Cincinnati died Friday afternoon after his sled failed to negotiate a curve and crashed in Luce County's Columbus Township, about 375 miles north of Detroit.
Barhorst was thrown from the snowmobile along with his 25-year-old wife Megan, who was recovering at a hospital in Petoskey.
The Daily Press of Escanaba says Barhorst recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq, serving with the 37th Infantry Brigade of the Ohio Army National Guard.
According to state police records, Barhorst was at least the 20th person killed in snowmobile accidents so far this winter in Michigan.
