CENTRAL OHIO -- Many Central Ohioans are having an increasingly difficult time making ends meet -- let alone donating to charities.
One local foundation has been taking steps to help charities when contributions are down.
NBC 4's Tom Brockman GOT ANSWERS Thursday.
"Unemployment is rising. People are losing their jobs. People who have played by the rules all their life all of sudden are finding themselves in foreclosure," Columbus Foundation CEO and President Doug Kridler said.
Kridler said those factors, among others, have caused a significant drop in charitable contributions.
The drop was so drastic the foundation declared a critical-need alert.
The foundation, with the help of generous donors, kicked off an effort last month to encourage more people to give during this crucial time.
With some $500,000 in private donations, the foundation announced they would match 50 cents of every dollar donated through its Web site to one of 20 charities that specialize in food and shelter support services such as the Salvation Army.
Wednesday night, the foundation reached its goal with $1.5 million in donations.
We hear so much about the public stimulus packages. What's interesting about this is it is a local solution by local people at a time when money is short, Kridler said.
Although the foundation has reached its goal, Kridler said contributions still were desperately needed.
