ABERDEEN, Ohio-- An ultralight aircraft has crashed in a rural area in southwestern Ohio, killing the only person on board.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol says the pilot was a man who lived in the area, and his family arrived later at the crash scene.
Sgt. Shannon Utter says the crash was reported at 5:09 p.m. Sunday in a wooded area off State Route 763 near Aberdeen.
The crash site is about 40 miles southeast of Cincinnati.
Utter identified the dead pilot as 48-year-old Richard Swope of Aberdeen. Utter says the aircraft was a homemade, ultralight design.
He says witnesses reported it had been in the air about two or three minutes before there was some type of malfunction and the aircraft struck a tree.
