CLEVELAND, Ohio
An Ohio study is trying to determine if Canada geese are to blame for pollution at a Lake Erie beach.
Federal and regional government scientists are checking if goose droppings might be to blame for high bacteria counts at the Euclid Creek/Villa Angela beach at the city line on Cleveland's east side.
Researchers first gathered goose waste from the shoreline in September 2007 to determine whether the bacteria is from humans or the geese. There have been no conclusive findings.
Bacteria in the swimming area has annually made the beach the dirtiest in northeast Ohio, sometimes with bacteria readings hundreds of times higher than any other on Lake Erie. The beach has been closed nearly 50 times per summer in recent years.
