COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus City Schools unveils its new downtown High School on Monday night, complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
It's the first high school downtown in nearly 30 years, NBC 4's Tanya Hutchins reported.
The Information Technology students are already in the Columbus Downtown High School, along with cosmetology students.
The location will allow the school district to consolidate its northeast, northwest and southeast career centers by the end of the year.
"We pull students from all 20 schools in Columbus schools, therefore, we have students on the south side, the east side, the north side, west side, so it allows all these students to come to us and be centrally located," said Dave Mangas, director of Columbus Downtown High School.
It cuts down on travel time and increases study time, because the students are there all day.
"I love it. It's bigger than our last career center and the space around it. It's more ergonomically designed to do what we need to do," said Shawnese Allie, a cosmetology student.
One of the highlights is the Culinary Arts program.
"We are going to have a full-service restaurant. We're going to have an outside café, a coffee shop and a full catering company that will be run and managed by the students," said Pegeen Cleary, culinary arts instructor.
Students will learn to prep, cook and serve the food as well as clean up the restaurant, which will be open to the public.
"Being in the state of the art kitchen gives the students the opportunity to be able to learn how to use equipment they're going to see in the finest restaurants in Columbus, Ohio," Cleary said.
