COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A man rushed into a burning building early Saturday to save a neighbor who was trapped inside.
The Columbus Division of Fire was called out just after 4 a.m. Saturday to the Maple Glen Apartments off of Alum Creek Drive on the city's East Side.
Upon arrival the companies encountered a three-story occupied apartment building with fire in a third-floor apartment extending into the attic. The apartment was occupied.
NBC 4’s Patrick Preston was on the scene and spoke to the brave neighbor.
Kevin Moore was letting his dogs out as he saw smoke rising from the apartment complex.
Moore sprung into action. He described running into the burning building and dragging his neighbor to safety.
Moore saw thick, black smoke coming from the apartment and kicked the door in of the fire apartment.
He said he crawled into the apartment and dragged the individual out of the apartment. He then carried the victim down the stairs until the paramedics arrived.
Firefighters on the scene also assisted numerous people hanging out windows down ladders to safety.
The fire was quickly contained to the apartment of origin.
The occupant of the apartment was transported to OSU Burn Center with second and third degree burns to over 97 percent of his body and was in critical condition, not likely to survive.
Smoke detectors were present and operating in the building. There were no firefighter injuries to report.
Investigators said they believe the fire began in the kitchen and was accidental.
Twelve units were affected, but only one was destroyed. The Red Cross was assisting displaced residents.
