COLUMBUS, Ohio-- A man who tried to extract his teenage granddaughter from an apparent assault by teen girls and boys has died of head injuries sustained when he intervened.
Columbus police identified William K. Smith, 47, as the 18th homicide victim in Columbus in 2009.
He died Saturday afternoon after family members authorized the withdrawal of life support that had sustained Smith since he suffered severe head trauma on Wednesday evening.
According to the original police report, a group of males and females became involved in an assault on the victim's teenage granddaughter.
Smith was injured when he attempted to defend her.
One of the suspects described as black male, who is 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 300 pounds, punched the victim and then knocked him to the ground.
No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.
