COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Gambling experts say the poor economy is the biggest obstacle facing supporters of a plan that would establish casinos in four Ohio cities. Joseph Weiner, vice president of Spectrum Gaming in New Jersey, says the economic climate isn't good for investing in casinos. He also thinks casinos in Ohio would saturate the regional market that includes casinos in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
William Thompson, a professor at the University of Las Vegas who has written books about the industry, doubts Ohio casinos would lure many gamblers from surrounding states. But Penn National Gaming, one of the backers of the Ohio plan, says the concept will work because casinos in Cleveland, Columbus Cincinnati and Toledo would be jewels in prime downtown locations. Supporters are aiming to put the issue before voters on the November ballot.
