COLUMBUS, Ohio —A resident of Gahanna has been found guilty of voter registration fraud, a first for Franklin County since 2007.
Franklin County resident Cathy E. LaMaster pleaded guilty to voter registration fraud in relation to the November 2008 general election.
According to the Franklin County Board of Elections, LaMaster admitted to submitting a voter registration under her own name and a second registration under her daughter’s name. She voted absentee for both registrations while her daughter had registered and voted by absentee ballot in Guernsey County, where she attended college.
LaMaster’s sentence includes a six month suspended jail sentence, one year on probation, a $1,000 fine and to pay court costs. The daughter was not found to be involved and was not charged.
This case is just one of several referred to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s office for further investigation regarding possible voter fraud from the November 2008 general election. The duplicate voter registration was found when utilizing the federally mandated statewide voter registration system to regularly review registrations between Ohio counties.
The most recent case of registration or voter fraud in Franklin County prior to this incident was in the November 2007 general election when a Reynoldsburg resident was convicted of registering and voting in Franklin and Licking counties.
