CINCINNATI -- An 1804 silver dollar that is one of only 15 known to exist has sold for $2.3 million at auction in Cincinnati.
Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries says coin dealer John Albanese of Bedminster, N.J., had the top bid for the 1804 Adams-Carter silver dollar.
The Thursday auction was the main event at the ongoing Central States Numismatic Society Convention.
Coin Values magazine rates the rare silver dollar as the seventh most valuable coin in the world. The most valuable is a $20 double eagle from 1933 that sold for $7.6 million in 2002.
The Adams-Carter coin is named for two owners. Phineas Adams was a 19th century collector, and Amon Carter Sr. was a Texas entrepreneur and publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
