AMELIA, Ohio -- A taxpayer revolt has divided the residents of one Cincinnati-area community, and it might end up wiping their village off the map. Voters in the century-old village of Amelia will vote Tuesday on a proposal to dissolve the village of fewer than 4,000 people. Elected officials are trying to hold the village together, but a failed tax proposal - first put forth in 2007 - has led to hard feelings.
One group of residents wants to avoid paying more taxes by splitting the village between two townships. Another group wants to keep the town together. The two have waged war in meetings, with yard signs and on the Internet. Mayor Leroy Ellington says a recent town meeting was so brutal, it should have been called a "town beating."
