COLUMBUS, Ohio -- About 1,700 city workers in Columbus have agreed to take five days off without pay to help Mayor Michael Coleman close a $13 million budget gap.
Many of the days will be taken by converting paid holidays such as Memorial Day and Labor Day to unpaid holidays.
The furlough deal approved Monday by City Council affects nonunion managers and about 700 members of a union that represents refuse workers, 911 operators and park maintenance workers.
Meanwhile, the city continues to negotiate with another union to have about 1,200 professionals and midlevel managers take unpaid days off.
Coleman says the furloughs can save $1.65 million in the city's general fund this year.
