Newark Celebrates After Levy Passes

»  Comments | Post a Comment

NEWARK, Ohio -- Newark City Schools Superintendent Keith Richards had two versions of a speech Tuesday night.

One in case the 7.5-mill operating levy passed, and one in case it failed again.

By a close margin, 51 to 49 percent, voters said yes to the levy.

If the levy hadn't passed, a district mom and employee said she was ready to leave.

"I'm here because of my kids. If it didn't work and they took from my children, I don't want to be part of a community that didn't support my kids," said Maryann Landerman.

It's a different atmosphere in the city today and within the walls of local schools.

Signs that said, "Vote for schools" now say, "Thank you, Newark."

The yes vote means some bussing will return and no more cuts will be added to the more than 100 staff positions eliminated over the years following years of no votes.

Extra-curricular costs will stay flat for parents, and there is a chance some things that had been cut could be brought back to life over the course of this three-year levy.
