COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Board of Education has voted overwhelmingly to endorse Gov. Ted Strickland's plan for revamping public schools.

The panel voted 15-to-3 on Wednesday to support a resolution favoring Strickland's plan. His proposal includes a new funding formula and a host of changes to teaching, classroom and graduation criteria. Legislative Republicans have criticized the plan for being underfunded and riddled with budget miscalculations.

In its resolution, the school board urges state lawmakers to include flexibility in the plan's final version to give school districts time to phase in the new requirements.

The board is made up of 19 members, 11 elected and eight appointed. It has been setting state education policy since 1956.
