HELENA, Mont. -- A former state government lawyer in Montana faces extradition to Ohio where he's accused of stealing $109,000 from the American Motorcyclist Association.
Dal Smilie is accused of grand theft by deception and receiving stolen property from the motorcycle group, based in suburban Columbus, between January 2003 and December 2007. Smilie was a member of the association's board of directors for 25 years, including a term as chairman, before he resigned in November 2007. He appeared in court in Montana yesterday.
Sixty-year-old Smilie says he's surprised by his arrest because he thought he and the association had reached an amicable settlement almost a year ago. He's accused of inflating travel reimbursement claims.
