FRANKLIN COUNTY -- A financially troubled school district held a meeting to discuss its options going forward.
NBC 4’s Ana Jackson reported with the FAST FACTS.
After voters turned down its levy last week, the South-Western City Schools board began to plan for an 11th hour try.
A unanimous vote Thursday night set the table for a second and final vote Monday.
Board members voted to put an 8.3-mill levy on the special Tuesday, Aug. 4, ballot.
Levy campaign organizers already were off and running, vowing to saturate every corner of the district with the message that failure will mean no sports, no after extra-curricular activities, the closing of two schools, the elimination of high-school busing and the elimination of 50 staff positions.
There won’t be another option.
Despite petition efforts, the board said no to a pay-to-play program.
“At our current levels, it would be $700 per pupil per activity. Now, for some families that wouldn’t work,” school board president Cathy Johnson said.
For some, taking pay-to-play off the tables means an exit from the district.
So, the race is on: A race to raise tens of thousands of dollars to get the levy on the ballot and a race to get voters to pass the levy.
