COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A liberal policy group is asking Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee to turn his experience at a coal mining company into a teachable moment.
ProgressOhio said Monday that he should donate his stock in Richmond, Va.-based Massey Energy to nonprofit environmental and community groups. The group also echoed calls for Gee to step down from the board of the mining giant.
The company's shareholders meeting is Tuesday.
Gee has been an influential voice for building a green energy economy. Massey practices mountaintop removal coal mining, which environmentalists say runs counter to Gee's public position.
Gee declined comment through an Ohio State spokeswoman.
