NEWARK, Ohio -- A Newark man pleaded guilty to murdering his father Tuesday.
NBC 4 has been on the story since the beginning and had an update.
Donald Carico Jr., 46, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and firearm charges Tuesday.
A Licking County grand jury returned a three-count indictment against the Newark man Oct. 10, 2008. The charges included aggravated murder, gross abuse of a corpse, felony theft and a firearm specification.
He was sentenced to 28 years to life in prison on the aggravated murder and firearm charges.
Various concerned citizens reported they hadn't seen Donald Carico Sr. for quite some time, the county's prosecuting attorney said in a release.
Prosecutor Kenneth W. Oswalt said some citizens reported suspicious behavior on the son's part.
Officers discovered Carico Sr.'s body Saturday, Oct. 4, inside the home he shared with his son. The body was found in a small bedroom that appeared to be used as a small office or study.
Evidence suggested Carico Sr., 76, likely was killed in late July of 2008 and his body had remained in the home since, according to a release.
Police caught and arrested Carico Jr. that Saturday.
The cause of death later was determined to be gunshot wounds to the head, the prosecutor said.
Carico Jr. did not qualify for the death penalty, according to earlier statements by Licking County Prosecutor Ken Oswalt.
