AKRON, Ohio -- Akron's mayor will fight a recall election and says removing him from office would steer the city in the wrong direction.
Democrat Don Plusquellic has been Akron's mayor for 23 years.
He wrote to the city council clerk on Monday and said he has no intention of resigning.
That sets the stage for the council to schedule a recall election within weeks.
Plusquellic says Akron has made measurable progress attracting and keeping jobs, fighting neighborhood crime and creating a good quality of life.
Critics of the mayor's leadership collected enough petition signatures to force a recall election. They say Plusquellic is running up the city's debt.
