Center Poised To Help Automakers Meet New Guidelines

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Getting passenger cars and trucks to meet new federal mile-per-gallon and emission standards by 2016 is going to be some of the technology being researched at OSU's Center for Automotive Research.

Center Director Giorgio Rizzoni applauds the Obama adminstration's bold new rule requiring the minimum average mile-per-gallon for passenger cars and trucks to be set at 35.5.

What does that mean for the car of the future?

Rizzoni says in order for automakers to meet that 2016 deadline two things must happen: "Cars and trucks will be made significantly smaller in size. No more 8-cylinder engines," Rizzoni says.

Another way automakers could meet the new requirements include advanced technology such as plug-in hybrid cars and trucks.
