South-Western City Schools Goes Back To The Ballot

GROVE CITY, Ohio -- The South-Western City School District will go back to voters in August, asking for the same 8.3-mill operating levy that was voted down earlier this month.

But the district is planning for the worst-case scenario and is moving forward with a drastic list of cuts.

Among the cuts is all high school busing including to non-public and charter schools. Walk zones will expand to two miles.

All schools will only be open one-hour before classes begin and one hour after classes end. There will be no evening activities in an effort to cut down on utility costs.

The Kingston School will be closed and students will be assigned to new schools by the end of May.

Harrisburg Elementary School will also close. Students will attend Darbydale Elementary School, however some students will be placed in other schools because of a classroom shortage.

The Alternative School will be housed at the South-Western Career Academy.

Sixty-six staff members have already been notified about losing their jobs and remaining teachers will receive their assignments in June.

There is cautious optimism that programs will be reinstated even if the August levy passes.

The head of the district's transition team said it will be difficult to reinstate programs because they will only have two and a half weeks to do so. A list of what the district can bring back will be created later in the summer.

The district would have to work with the Ohio Capital Conference to determine how schedules would be arranged if athletics were to be reinstated.
