COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A woman has been accused of stealing hundreds of dollars worth of meat from a local grocer.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
A Columbus woman has been charged after she allegedly stole meat from local Kroger stores.
City Assistant Prosecutor Bill Hedrick said Angela Green stole everything from prime rib to scallops during the past few months.
Hedrick said she hid the allegedly stolen meat in her pants, purse and even her bra.
Green allegedly admitted to the crime last month, saying she was stealing the meat to resell it.
The Ohio Grocers Association said that type of crime is devastating to business because grocers operate on such a low profit margin.
Grocers make 1 cent on every dollar, according to OGA.
For every $100 in meat someone steals, the grocer has to sell $10,000 more to make up the difference, according to OGA’s Tom Jackson.
Kroger said meat is the second most popular item that’s stolen from its stores. Health-and-beauty products are No. 1.
A Kroger spokesperson said surveillance cameras and in-store loss-prevention employees are ways the grocer combats the crime.
