Hard Times Soften Hearts In Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The economic crisis has made many Americans anxious and fearful. But in Ohio's capital city and across the country, it's also inspiring volunteerism, compassion and a shift in priorities. The Reverend Kevin Lutz oversees a Columbus-area soup kitchen, where he says volunteers continue to step up as the hard times bring out the best in people.

One Ohio Wesleyan University professor says some Americans are realizing their vulnerability. Shari Stone-Mediatore says it makes the middle class reach out and shed a common insulation from community problems. A spokesman for the Corporation for National and Community Service says nonprofit and volunteer groups are seeing a boom in participation around the country.
