Ohio Contractors Watching Pentagon Budget Moves

»  Comments | Post a Comment

DAYTON, Ohio -- Defense contractors in the Dayton-area say they're concerned about the Pentagon's new goal of converting more private contractors into civilian employees. Defense Secretary Robert Gates' proposed budget would replace contractors with 13,800 government employees across the country. But the past president of the Dayton Area Defense Contractors Association, Dale Kirby, says it's too soon to know whether the region - home to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base - will end up losing jobs.

He says when the government hires more personnel; often that increases the need for a supporting contractor work force. Also, the upcoming base realignment and closure process is set to bring 1,200 jobs to Wright-Patterson over the next few years, which could help offset any losses.
