COLUMBUS, Ohio – The summer may be brighter in one area of the Hilltop all because some citizens have volunteered their time in the midst of city budget cuts.
Earlier this year, Columbus closed several of its rec centers, but now some of them are back open because of volunteers with big hearts.
When the city shut down recreation centers all over Columbus due to budget cuts, there were some residents who stepped up to the plate.
Three days a week, Holton Park and Rec Center reopens, and no one there is being paid a dime.
They get donations wherever they can and give their own time to make the best of a bad situation.
Instead of letting the rec center stand idle and become overgrown with weeds, the volunteers are helping neighborhood kids plant their own gardens.
Inch by inch and row by row, the Hilltop kids who come to the center are going to watch their gardens grow -- all with the help of the volunteers.
