BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio -- A western Ohio hospital says it is investigating the death of a patient and illness of another after they showed symptoms of bacterial meningitis.
Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine said Tuesday the two patients were taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. Mary Rutan officials say one patient died Saturday and the other is in critical condition.
Wednesday, officials confirmed a third case of meningitis in an 11-month-old child from Logan County. Officials said the child is in no relation to the other two confirmed cases.
Meningitis is an infection of fluid surrounding the spinal cord and brain. The Ohio Department of Health says 21 cases have been reported in Ohio so far this year.
Logan County Health Commissioner Boyd Hoddinott says the type of meningitis officials believe the patients contracted is not contagious.
Bellefontaine is about 50 miles northwest of Columbus.
