COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Mayor Michael Coleman kicked off the 10th season of Neighborhood Pride on the city's far East Side Wednesday.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

Tussing Elementary School students surrounded Coleman as he announced this year's participants in the 10th annual Neighborhood Pride week, which takes place Monday, June 8, through Friday, June 12.

The weeklong effort helps hundreds of families work with city crews to clean, fix up, beautify and strengthen Columbus' neighborhoods.

The Tussing Blockwatch area, Deshler Park on the city's Southeast Side, Clinton Estates on the city's North Side and Arlington Park on the city's Northwest Side will all take advantage of the city's resources to spruce up their neighborhoods, address code violations and deter crime.

The mayor chose the four areas after an application process and input from residents and police. Ten neighborhoods applied.

Neighborhood Services Coordinator Bruce Black said about four years ago, Donatos Pizza wouldn't deliver in the Tussing Road area our of fear of being robbed.

He said the neighborhood has improved with the help of the 500-member block watch, but the city wants to give the residents the push they need to keep the momentum going.

Tussing Road area residents said they look forward to the program so they can try to return their neighborhood to what it once was.

Since 2000, the city has worked on 60 areas as part of Neighborhood Pride campaigns.

Usually, six areas are chosen each year. There were only four this year due to budget constraints and not as much staff available to help with the effort.

Volunteers typically pitch in to help residents during Neighborhood Pride.
