COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Authorities closed U.S. Route 62 and evacuated nearby buildings after a gas leak Thursday morning.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

The leak was at U.S. Route 62 (Harrisburg Pike) and Briggs Road.

Both directions of U.S. Route 62, between Briggs Road and October Ridge Drive, were closed at about 9:45 a.m., according to ODOT.

Columbus fire and Columbia Gas were called to the scene.

Nearby buildings also were evacuated as a precaution, including Auto Zone at 1476 Harrisburg Pike and possibly the Speedway at the corner of Briggs and U.S. 62 and a nearby car dealership.

ODOT began a project to widen U.S. 62 at the intersections of Briggs and Clime roads this past summer.

U.S. Route 62 was reopened to traffic shortly after 1 p.m.
