COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The death of an Ohio police captain is Preble County last week after an illness linked to H1N1 has local law enforcement calling for changes.
They want the Centers for Disease Control to change rules to treat law enforcement officers as first responders and local police are seeking changes to make sure they are in line to get vaccinated.
Some state law enforcement agencies asked the CDC and local health departments to classify police as a higher priority for the vaccine -- like firefighters and paramedics.
"It's our law enforcement officers who are first on the scene," said Fraternal Order of Police President Jim Gilbert.
This week, Congressman Pat Tiberi wrote to the CDC asking why law enforcement wasn't classified in the same target group as firefighters and emergency crews.
A response from the CDC to Tiberi's office explained that local health departments have some leeway in who they designate tier 1 priority.
