EDEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A teenager is facing charges after accidentally shooting another teenager in a Licking County home Sunday.

The shooting occurred at a home in the 9700 block of Stradley Road in St. Louisville in Mary Ann Township at about 1:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, deputies found 17-year-old Heath high school student Tyler Gargus dead from a single gunshot wound to the face.

Detectives said that during interviews they learned that 16-year-old Zachary Harvey accidentally shot Gargus in his bedroom.

According to statements, the boys were playing with a shotgun and rifle that were believed to be unloaded.

The suspect lived in the home where the shooting occurred.

Harvey was arrested and placed in juvenile custody. He was charged with a first-degree misdemeanor of negligent homicide.

At a court appearance Monday, he was remanded to the juvenile facility in Lancaster until a hearing in four weeks. The judge ordered a safety assessment to determine if he may hurt himself.

At the most, Harvey could spend 90 days in jail.

Counselors were on hand at Heath High School to talk to students if needed.
