COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Could high-crime areas benefit from security cameras? City leaders are willing to find out.
Columbus City Council approved $250,000 Monday night to hire a security consulting firm to help determine which neighborhoods could benefit from the cameras.
The security cameras could be installed in partnerships between the city and neighborhood associations.
"To make sure we do it right, ensure privacy and address things to they feel good about the partnership with the city on this strategy," said Councilman Andrew Ginther.
The $250,000 initial funding would be just the first drop in a potentially deep bucket.
"This is going to be costly no matter how many you put out. That is why we have brought in a nationally recognized company to give details to cost," Ginther said.
The cameras have worked in some neighborhoods. Without city partnership, Olde Towne East is already using the cameras.
