COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A Columbus police officer shot an armed robbery suspect after a brief pursuit and an altercation with the suspect, according to police.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

CPD received a report on an allegedly armed robbery suspect at the Motel 1 at 3190 E. Main St. at about 8:06 p.m. Wednesday.

Police later identified the suspect as James Thomas.

An officer saw Thomas exit a motel room and leave the parking lot in an allegedly stolen vehicle.

The officer was attempting to keep the vehicle in sight while waiting for backup when the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, according to a police report.

Police pursued the vehicle Thomas to the area of North James Road and Ruhl Avenue when it struck a vehicle on North James Road.

Thomas stopped the vehicle briefly and then rammed a police cruiser that was pulling up to the crash scene, according to police.

Officer Michael A. Neal exited the wrecked cruiser and attempted to take him into custody.

There was an altercation between Neal and Thomas, and Neal shot the suspect in the leg, a police report said.

Thomas fled on foot for a short distance but was taken into custody by responding officers.

The female driver involved in the initial crash on North James Road was transported to The Ohio State University Hospital East in stable condition.

Neal and Officer Robert J. Shepherd were treated at the scene for injuries they received when the suspect crashed into the cruiser. Both officers later were treated at and released from Grant Medical Center.

Thomas was treated at Grant Medical Center for a single gunshot wound to the leg and later was released into police custody.

Thomas was arrested for outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants. He was charged with aggravated robbery from a November incident at the United Dairy Farmers at 2635 W. Broad St.

Thomas was arraigned and given bond in Franklin County Friday. A judge set his bond at $50,000.

Neal is a seven-year veteran and is assigned to 9 Precinct B Company.

The Critical Incident Response Team was to investigate the police-involved shooting.

No more immediate information was available.
