COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding a woman's assault -- and a man who was found with a gunshot wound inside an area home.
The incident occurred at a home in the 190 block of West Pacemont Road at about 4:45 p.m. in the Clintonville area.
The woman was found covered in blood and injured on the front lawn, along with a hammer.
"She come running out the side door with a hammer in her hand, saying, 'He's trying to kill me. He's trying to kill me.' So I grabbed the hammer, put her on the ground and called the squad and they went running up the stairs and said he'd shot himself," said Mike McClure, an area resident.
"I went up and took a look and she had gashes all over her head, was completely bloody," said Phil Franck, an area resident.
Inside the home, responding officers found a man in a bathroom, suffering from a gunshot wound. Officials said the gunshot wound may have been self-inflicted.
"At this point, nobody is making any statements. They're both in trauma. So what we need to do is we're trying to gather information from some of the area residents and we're trying to find out exactly what occurred. That's going to take us a little time and hopefully we can speak to one of the individuals involved soon," said Lt. Jennifer Knight.
Initial reports indicated that the woman was also reportedly shocked with a Taser-like object in the neck.
Both were taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition.
