Ohio Chief Justice To Push Appointment Of Justices

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, the Ohio State Bar Association and the League of Women Voters of Ohio want a constitutional amendment to require that appointment of state Supreme Court justices.

A strong majority of participants in a state conference studying the selection of judges supports ending popular elections to select justices. A perception that large amounts of money influences judicial decision-making is the driving force behind the move.

Chief Justice Thomas Moyer and other supporters will draft a proposed amendment and present it to conference participants for input. They will then decide whether to take the proposal to the Legislature, or gather signatures to put it on the ballot.

A similar proposal failed at the polls in 1987.
