COLUMBUS, Ohio -- According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources more than 40,000 young hunters will hunt this weekend for youth deer gun season statewide.
With death and injury occurring every year nationally from accidental shootings, ODNR is stressing safety for youth deer gun season and regular deer gun season which starts November 30.
First, treat your disarmed gun with the same respect that you would with a loaded gun, always assume that your gun is loaded and ready to shoot.
Second, never, ever point your gun at anyone even when unloaded.
Third, always point your weapon in a safe direction.
Fourth, keep your safety on until right before you're ready to shoot.
Youth deer-gun season is open statewide to hunters 17 years old and younger. Plugged shotguns, muzzleloaders, handguns and bows are legal.
All participants must wear hunter orange, possess a valid Ohio hunting license and a $12 youth-deer permit, and must be accompanied by a non-hunting adult in the field.
