COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A man was fatally shot during a home invasion Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Columbus police were called to a home on the 4900 block of Avalon Avenue on the city's Northeast Side shortly after noon.
Two people were home at the time of the incident: a female homeowner and a male friend. The female's fiance was not home at the time.
Two suspects forced their way into the home, according to authorities.
One of the suspects had a knife. He struggled with the female homeowner.
The male friend tried to help, and police said the second suspect pulled out a firearm and shot the male.
The male who was later identified as 38-year-old Bradley P. Greiner, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspects fled the scene in a tan or silver PT Cruiser with New Jersey plates.
Columbus police continued to investigate. Homicide detectives were called to the scene.
CPD said the motive for the home invasion has not been determined.
Police have not released additional information currently.
Greiner's homicide was the city's 76th of 2009.
