COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus police were called to a local high school late Tuesday morning after fights broke out in the building.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
CPD called extra officers to Columbus City Schools' Independence High School at 5175 E. Refugee Rd. on the city's East Side at about 11 a.m.
The situation was under control shortly before noon.
District Spokesperson Kim Norris said a couple of fights broke out in different areas of the building. She said the students involved in the fighting mostly were girls.
CPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Rich Weiner said there were five separate fights going on at the same time.
A teacher was struck while trying to break up one of the altercations, Weiner said.
Eight students will be charged, according to Weiner. He said summons to appear in court were sent home with those students.
One of the charges could be a felony because it involved the assault of a teacher.
The school wasn't placed on lockdown, according to Norris. The school always is on a level-1 lockdown that requires all exterior entrances and exits remain locked.
There wasn't an escalation to a higher-level lockdown.
Authorities said squads weren't called to the school and there weren't any transports out of the situation.
No more immediate information was available.
