TOLEDO, Ohio -- The move to stop Ohio drivers from texting behind the wheel has spread to Toledo.
Mayor Carty Finkbeiner is expected to sign a measure approved by the city council Tuesday that bars motorists from sending or reading text messages while operating a vehicle. The ordinance is similar to one that took effect this summer in Cleveland.
Last month, officials in Summit County, which includes Akron, also passed a texting-while-driving ban.
The Toledo law is scheduled to go on the books Jan. 1 and will carry fines of up to $1,000 and possible jail for repeat violators.
Two council members voted no, arguing that the issue of driver texting should be addressed at the state level. Proposed statewide bans have been introduced in the Legislature.
