MAUMEE, Ohio -- Police in northwest Ohio say they have arrested a man who swiped a Salvation Army red kettle full of donated money while claiming to hate Christmas.
Police in Maumee say 44-year-old Shawn Krieger of Toledo pushed one of the charity's bell ringers to the ground when she tried to take the kettle back. Sgt. Jeff Siebenaler says Krieger was arrested Monday morning and charged with robbery.
Police say he grabbed the kettle Saturday evening outside a general store. They say the bell ringer grasped at the chain suspending the kettle but was pushed down by Krieger, who told her: "I can't stand you and your bell-ringing. I hate Christmas." Police say he drove off in a pickup truck with the kettle and tripod it was hanging from.
The Salvation Army estimates the kettle held $500 to $700.
