Beckey Stamm Tells Her Survivor Story

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Beckey Stamm's journey began with her mammogram. She was called back for a biopsy and then received her diagnosis of breast cancer.

"It was completely the mammogram. It went for the ordinary annoyance of having a mammogram, which is not fun and never, ever expected anything," Stamm said. "I was angry, of course. I was angry that this happened to me. I was angry that they were going to take a part of my body away."

Stamm had a mastectomy and went through three months of chemotherapy.

"I really didn't feel like I was going to die until maybe halfway through it," Stamm said.

According to the American Cancer Society, the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman's life is about one in eight.

This year, about 192,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women and about 40,000 women will die from breast cancer.

There are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. -- and Stamm is one of them.

"They were right -- all those people who said you will be healthy, you will have life," Stamm said.
