Mixed-Use Development Could Doom Observatory

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Plans to put in a big-box retailer and residential housing along U.S. Route 23 in Delaware could spell the end of the Perkins Observatory.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

Lighting makes it difficult to see the stars and heavens.

"I would say it would end our use as a public institution," Perkins Observatory Director Tom Burns.

Over the years, Burns has seen the growth along the stretch of U.S. 23, north of Columbus.

Burns said the mixed use development of townhomes and retail space poses a significant risk to the 200 to 300 programs offered by the observatory.

More importantly, he knows how much good the observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike, has done in educating both the young and old.

The developer's plans would leave the observatory surrounded by multiple light sources, which would eliminate the ability to gaze at stars.

The Delaware Planning Commission told NBC 4 talks with the concept developer have just begun and they are, perhaps, years away before a final plan is approved by city council.

The first public meeting before the planning commission is set for Wednesday at 7 p.m. on the second floor of Delaware City Hall.
