City Council Members Furlough Themselves

»  Comments | Post a Comment

AKRON, Ohio -- The city council in Akron has agreed to accept cost-cutting furloughs, the same as many other city workers.

A vote Monday means council members will take 38 hours' pay for nine weeks, instead of being paid for the usual 40-hour work weeks.

Councilwoman Tina Merlitti says she and the other council members are city employees, too, so none of them made an issue of the furloughs.

Akron is struggling to close a $7 million budget gap by the end of the year.

The city laid off 91 employees last week, including more than three dozen firefighters.
