LANCASTER, Ohio -- Out of Ohio's 88 counties, Fairfield County is one of four to have the lowest sales tax percentage at 6.25 percent compared to 6.75 percent in Franklin County and 7.75 percent in Cuyahoga County.
However, the tides may be changing in Fairfield County as reduced funding is coming in from the state and officials have seen declining local fee revenues.
Fairfield County officials have proposed a .25 percent sales-tax increase, which would bring the sales tax 6.5 percent countywide.
"We already get taxed enough. I've got two kids at home. You can't even afford to take care of them anymore," a concerned citizen said.
Fairfield County Treasurer Jon Slater said the proposed increase is not about spending more money -- it's about maintaining county services.
Fairfield County officials will hold two public hearings on the proposed increase. One will be on October 19 and the other on October 23.
Both meetings will be held at the county administration building in Lancaster.
