COLUMBUS, Ohio -- From gang activity to property crimes, one local community is fighting back and stepping up security.
Community leaders in Weinland Park teamed up with Columbus police and fire and Ohio State police to show residents how to handle various dangerous situations.
"We're trying to help our neighbors to become more informed, better aware of what to do, when to do and how to do," said Joyce Hughes, of the Weinland Park Civic Association.
Hughes helped start the civic association six years ago. She said it was a rough start, but residents have become more engaged in the last two years.
"People taking pride in their property, beginning to clean up their property," Hughes said.
Adults learned how to ward off attackers. Children escaped from a burning house in a fire simulation.
The Safety Academy travels from community to community. So far it has been to six different neighborhoods. Community leaders are hoping to guide residents in the right direction.
If you'd like the safety academy to visit your neighborhood, call Columbus police.
