CHARLESTON, W.Va.
The president of the Pagans Motorcycle Club is heading to jail until a federal magistrate can decide whether he should get a chance at bail.
But the decision by U.S. Magistrate Judge Mary Stanley wasn't a simple one, after defendant David Barbeito showed up in her courtroom without a lawyer.
The Maryland man's defense attorney in that state was unable to attend Friday's hearing in Charleston, or find someone in West Virginia to represent him.
Stanley also learned that a Kanawha Circuit grand jury has indicted Barbeito on kidnapping and conspiracy charges.
The federal indictment against Barbeito and 54 others allege such crimes as kidnapping, robbery, extortion and conspiracy to commit murder.
Stanley jailed Barbeito pending a Thursday hearing.
