Cleveland Buses Will 'Talk' To Warn Pedestrians

»  Comments | Post a Comment

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland is making its public buses talk to improve pedestrian safety following two fatal accidents.

Regional Transit Authority officials on Tuesday told agency board members that by the spring, all buses will be equipped with a vocal alert system. People in crosswalks will hear the audible warning, "Caution, bus turning, pedestrians look both ways, look both ways."

The verbal commands will replace warning beeps now heard when a bus turn signal is clicked on. Michael York, transit authority deputy general manager of operations, says people complained about the beeping noise, and some bus drivers decided not to use their turn signals as often.

Two pedestrians have died after being struck by buses in Cleveland crosswalks since September 2008.
