COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Officials are investigating an explosion and fire on the city's east side that occurred Tuesday night.
The explosion was reported at an apartment complex at 3378 Dale Avenue at about 7:45 p.m.
Neighbors said they heard a loud boom and saw black smoke pour out of the home.
The fire was contained in about 15 minutes.
Building inspectors have been called to the scene to check the integrity of the structure as well as the neighboring apartment building as well.
One wall of the building was torn from the building during the explosion.
The fire chief was the first on the scene and said he saw the bottom of the home kicked off by the explosion and then the wall fell.
It appeared that the building was vacant and the gas meter had been off since May.
No one was inside at the time of the explosion.
The incident is under investigation.
